Design session 2

In design session 2, we explore the colour stories, fabric and textures, colour extraction from my artist research. When I choose colour from my research, I found it’s very hard. because before this session, I usually directly add colour into my clothes and looked if it is suitable with the atmosphere. But when I chose the colour individually, it’s hard to decided which one is better, there is too many details on my research page, I didn’t use a range of specific colour, but also combined with some sketch. when I used the 5 colour I chose from the collage, it looks disharmonious. I think I should pay attention to the clothes when I’m thinking about the colour.

In addition, I also got some thought about “experimental”, before this session, I had an adobe course with Sing, I asked him why a lot of people said my design looks like costume instead of a garment. He gave me some examples of design, and when I asked him if it is weirder than my works, Sing said it is called innovated for him. I suddenly noticed the difference between me and people who think it’s like costume, I always thought experimental work is “weird” or “strange”, but actually, the real meaning of experimental works is “innovation”, that is the difference of my attitude, I’m still used an angle from an viewer but not a participator, so that whenever I tried to made some experimental works, it just became weird and even myself cannot ensure if I’m interested in these works. As a result, the garment designed by me would become weird but not innovated, and the dramatic shapes (It’s one of the most common characteristics of experimental fashion design works after Alexander McQueen) would just be similar with some design we used to saw. And that is what made my designs more like costume– I ignored the innovation itself, but just wanted to make it similar to other experimental work, which is too shallow.

The reason why I chose Dali as my theme is also because of I want to challenge myself; I always tend to stay in a safer area, I can’t appreciate Dali in a period, and now I want to do some research about him. It’s also an experimental for myself.
